Where the walking safari was born
Zambia is for travellers who want to be on foot. The walking safari was invented in the Luangwa Valley and is still done better here than anywhere, led by guides who read the ground rather than the radio. South Luangwa holds one of the densest leopard populations in Africa, the Lower Zambezi offers game viewing from a canoe, and Livingstone puts you at the edge of Victoria Falls, close enough, when the river is low, to swim in Devil's Pool. Camps are small, roads are few and the sense of wilderness is total.
